The Great South West Walk is tucked away near Portland in the South West Corner of Victoria near the South Australian Border. The 251Km Walk which we are doing half of  feels like a real wilderness experience, with nearly the whole route within national parks or reserves.

 

 

DAY 1 Nelson to Monibeong Camp 22.6KM

Day 1 of the Great South West Walk, from Nelson to Monibeong Camp, beckons you with a blend of coastal allure.

The first leg of your journey treats you to a stunning coastal spectacle as you venture along the rugged shoreline.

With each step, the rhythmic crash of waves against ancient rock formations serenades you, creating a captivating symphony of nature’s elements.

Day 2 Monibeong Camp to Swan Lake Camp 17km

Embark on Day 2’s 17-kilometer journey from Monibeong Camp to Swan Lake Camp, a remote haven along Discovery Bay’s untouched beaches.

The trail winds through a captivating landscape of sandy shores, coastal flora, and breathtaking ocean views. Your footprints leave the only marks on the pristine sands, creating an intimate connection with nature.

As you reach Swan Lake Camp, nestled in serene surroundings, take in the shimmering lake and set up camp, under the unpolluted night sky.

Day  3 Swan Lake Camp to Springs Camp 23.3km

Day 3’s 23.3-kilometer hike from Swan Lake Camp to Springs Camp unveils a dynamic landscape. Transitioning from serene lakeside views, the trail winds through diverse woodlands and rugged coastal stretches.

Along the way, you’ll encounter hidden coves, dramatic cliffs, and the mesmerizing rhythm of crashing waves, all contributing to an immersive sense of exploration.

As you approach Springs Camp, nestled in the wilderness, the ambiance shifts to rustic tranquility. The soothing sounds of nearby springs offer a serene backdrop for relaxation.

 

 

Day  4  Springs Camp to Mallee Camp 32.4km

Embark on Day 4’s challenging 32.4-kilometer hike from Springs Camp to Mallee Camp. The trail presents a rigorous yet rewarding journey, as you navigate through varying landscapes.

Leaving behind the serenity of Springs Camp, the path leads you through lush woodlands, rocky terrains, and open vistas, showcasing the diverse beauty of Discovery Bay.

Each step is a testament to your determination, culminating in a sense of accomplishment as you reach the welcoming embrace of Mallee Camp.

Set against the backdrop of the untamed wilderness, this campsite offers a well-deserved rest, where you can recharge and reflect on the remarkable distance you’ve covered.

Day  5  Mallee Camp to Portland  22.2km

Concluding your expedition on Day 5, embark on a 22.2-kilometer journey from Mallee Camp to Portland. The final leg of your adventure presents a mix of emotions as you bid farewell to the wilderness and approach the charming town of Portland.

 

The trail weaves through captivating landscapes, transitioning from rustic woodlands to glimpses of coastal charm.

With each step, the anticipation of reaching your destination grows, balanced by a sense of nostalgia for the untamed beauty you leave behind.

As you approach Portland, the pace of life seems to shift, trading remote solitude for the warmth of a welcoming community.
